Mighty Writers – was founded in 2009 by journalist Tim Whitaker and educator Rachel Loeper, who launched free writing classes to empower kids with the same tool that shaped their own lives—writing. Their goal: help young people express themselves clearly and succeed in school, work, and life.
Mighty Writers serves communities across eight sites in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with free after-school programs, summer camps, bilingual services, and community events. They also offer virtual workshops and bring writing programs directly into schools and partner organizations. By being present in the communities and working with local agencies, they become trusted messengers for the residents.
Through their Mighty Writers Distribution program, they provide families with food, diapers, books, and other essentials. By addressing the full spectrum of students’ needs, they help them grow into confident thinkers and powerful communicators.
The Legacy Foundation provided a grant supporting the Camden Food and Social Emotional Learning Integrated Literacy Whole Child Programs. The Whole Child Initiative is an effort to change the conversation about education that promotes long term development and success of all children.
