A very special grant was made to the New Life Presbyterian Church to build a “Special Needs Room”, which allows parents and families to attend church services while their special needs children are being well cared for. The grant was used to purchase toys and equipment needed to maximize the interaction of workers with children of special needs. Specifically, the room was supplied with large motor items such as a suspended swing, playhouse and tunnel. Also needed were learning tools to encourage the development of fine motor skills such as puzzles, blocks and marble mazes. Special measures had to be taken to assure that the room was a safe environment, such as padding on the walls and higher door locks and safety latches on drawers. All of these things combined gave the parents and workers the assurance of a safe and stimulating learning environment for their children during church services.
